Climate Action

Who we are.

We are a group of parishioners deeply concerned by accelerating climate change and the destruction of God’s world.  We came together following the commitment of the Anglican Church in New Zealand and Polynesia to divest from fossil fuels and as a response to the Church’s call for all members to take action for climate justice (The World is Our Host 2015).

Meetings.

The St Michael’s Climate Action Group meets on the first Tuesday of each month (except January) at 1.30.pm in the parish lounge.  All are welcome whether parishioners or not.

Some of our actions in 2016.

  • We took part as a church in the climate march before the Paris Climate talks in December 2015.
  •  We wrote to institutions including the ‘Big Five’ banks urging them to divest from fossil fuels.
  •  We hosted a large and successful evening with Bishop Victoria and Rod Oram on taking action for the climate. Comprehensive slides of Rod Oram’s talk are available.

Fasting.

On the first of each month we have committed to attend morning Mass which will have a climate focus  and also to mark the day by some form of personal action related to climate change e.g. a meat free day, a car free day , shopping free day etc.

Offsetting Carbon.

Decreasing our carbon footprint is more important than offsetting. However, it helps to offset unavoidable travel. Hinewai Reserve near Akaroa is our nearest accredited carbon sink. It is 1230 hectares of regenerating bush. Members who visited were impressed by its beauty and diversity. “It is a great example of not only sequestering carbon but also of promoting biodiversity, erosion control and water quality” (www.enviro-mark.com)
